On Friday, February 8, Tanguera is cancelled.

On Saturday, February 9, Mark and Ethan’s class is cancelled.  The schedule is pushed back by a week.

In general, for the rest of the studio activities (classes and practicas), we will cancel class if there is a declared snow emergency in Cambridge.  During a snow emergency, there is very limited parking and the city may tow cars in order to clear the snow.  Check the calendar!

Wednesdays at 7PM: Milonga Lisa, Milonga Traspie and Vals (Intermediate)

We will cover Milonga Lisa and Milonga Traspie, as well as the steps and rhythm of Tango Vals. The goal of this class is to have students be able to differentiate milongas and valses from tangos as well as distinguish Milonga and vals steps/figures from tango steps/figures.

The price is the usual $17 drop-in (or NETA class card).

Wednesdays at 8:20PM: NETA Student Practica

During the first 40 minutes, Ney will guide the practica in a way similar to the guided practica at Club Sunderland in Buenos Aires.  This involves supervised walking practice.  We will also feature a song translation at 9PM!

The price is $5 for those people not enrolled in a beginner series.

This course offers the intermediate/advanced dancer a richer and more subtle understanding of leading and following. Through the use of axis awareness students will refine their communication in the dance, as well as explore musical expression.

We will playfully experiment with volcadas, split weight, and other vocabulary, with the goal of incorporating these movements into a connected and intimate social tango experience.

As you may have noticed, we postponed the opening of Milonga 24 until the 27th.  And see you at Milonga XO this Friday, starting at 9PM!

We believe the best way to experience what NETA has to offer are the passes. They provide the most exposure, and are the best deal for our students. Class passes will remain the same price at $70 for a 5 class pass ($14/class) and $130 for a 10 class pass ($13/class). For those of you with passes at the higher price, we will refund the difference the next time you come in.  The 5 week beginner series will now be $75, but will include the weekly NETA Student Practica.

I want to stress that we don’t believe money should be a factor that affects anyone’s ability to learn and experience Argentine Tango.  We have many opportunities to volunteer at the studio to get class credits, and more are coming – stay tuned!

We wish you a Happy New Year, and hope you have enjoyed the holidays with friends and family.  As you know, we are in a time of transition, and I hope you bear with us as we make adjustments to our program over the next few weeks and months.  We are in the process of designing a new curriculum of classes – in the meantime, I want to share with you NETA’s resolutions for the year, and I hope they resonate enough so that you will join us in making them a reality.

#1. Surface the NETA community

Community and camaraderie have always been a part of the NETA community, a natural result of the bonds we form working and learning together in a friendly way in classes.  At the End of the Year party, we saw a spark of the great things that can happen when we all come together to celebrate our experiences with tango, among newcomers and more experienced students.  We hope to surface this community feeling a little more by holding a weekly NETA Student Practica, which will be the focal point of the week for the studio, allowing students from all the classes and levels to come together, get to know each other, practice and dance together.

The first on will be at NETA on Wednesday, January 2, from 8:20-10:20PM.  This is for all beginners, advanced beginners, intermediates and advanced dancers!

#2. Foster respect for the music

Tango is a lifelong pursuit because there is so much to learn, experience, enjoy and master.  At NETA, we want to provide a solid foundation through our classes and workshops, but we recognize that you can only teach certain aspects of tango, especially in a limited amount of class time every week, and other aspects have to be learned by experience through dancing in the milongas and practicas.  But there is one aspect of tango that seems to be greatly overlooked in general for those of us who don’t speak Spanish – an understanding of the music.  Not just of musical structures and phrasing, but the actual content of the music.

It may not be an easy goal, but we’ll start out the NETA Student Practica each week by choosing a song and looking at the translation and meaning.  We want to enable everyone to start associating the sound of the music with the content.  We’ll be assisted by native speakers from the community – if you can help out, let us know.

#3. Be a little more organized

We want to be a little more organized when it comes down to managing student relationships.  We are instituting a new computerized system to track attendance, class pass usage and student information.  Please be patient as we work out the kinks in the system – the increased efficiencies should make things better for all of us.
